The Advertisers’ Dream

A dream road sign

Express dream exit to shops

I frequently dream I’m smoking a cigarette. These dreams are disturbing because I haven’t had a cigarette in twenty years.

I don’t feel any desire to smoke during my waking hours, just in my dreams. Perhaps there is a hidden anxiety which requires a cigarette to sooth. Maybe it’s a memory from my youth when the consequences of smoking were deliberately ignored.

Whatever the reason, my slumber is spent blissfully smoking cigarettes.

I wonder if advertising has found a way to penetrate sleep. Is there a subliminal advertising campaign influencing my subconscious? Have advertisers broken through the last frontier and invaded dreams like they have our phones, websites, public spaces and schools? Have they acted upon research identifying midlife women as their best market?

Imagine the power advertising could have on our sleep. Dream commercials, planted every night, influencing our decisions when we wake.  Then again, why bother being awake?  Advertisers could plant credit cards inside our dreams. The campaign could be called ‘drop and shop’ or ‘buy as you lie’. The possibilities are endless.

Fancy a dream anyone?
